Profile
As an architect or interior designer, your profile should include a short and concise description of yourself. Show enthusiasm, personality, and professionalism while describing what you’re looking for in your next role and what you can offer the potential employer.
Work Experience
Start listing your work experience in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent position. Provide a brief description of your responsibilities in each role. These descriptions might answer the following questions:
Who did you report to?
How large was your team?
How many projects did you handle simultaneously?
What was your approach to time management?
Did you have direct interaction with clients?
Which phases of design were you primarily involved in?
What software programs did you use?
Highlight any notable project duties you performed.
Education
In the education section, include your degrees and any special certifications below your work experience. If you’ve earned honors such as Summa Cum Laude or Magna Cum Laude, make sure to mention them. Do not put your education in the sidebar, make sure it is featured below your work experience. Receiving a design degree is a major accomplishment and should be treated as such.
Contact
In the sidebar, place your contact information at the top of the resume. Double-triple check that it’s accurate and spelled correctly since this information is critical for potential employers to reach you.
Certifications
Include any licensing or certification information in the sidebar. If you have passed exams like ARE or NCIDQ, mention the number of exams completed to showcase your commitment towards licensure or certification.
Notable Projects
Highlighting your notable projects is crucial as it provides a relevant benchmark for potential employers. If you have an extensive project list, tailor it to showcase the projects that align with the firm you’re applying to, thus keeping the list concise and impactful.
Skills
List the software programs you are familiar with in the skills section. It is essential to include individual programs specifically for Adobe and Autodesk products. Avoid using generic terms like “Adobe Creative Suite” to avoid misinterpretations. Be explicit about your proficiency in each software, ensuring employers understand your strengths.
Polish
Before finalizing your resume, consider these steps for a polished and error-free document:
- Use InDesign’s spellcheck feature to ensure the accuracy of all text. Navigate to Edit Tab > Spelling > Check Spelling to run a spell check.
- Utilize AI tools like Copy.ai and Grammarly.ai to refine your content, ensuring it sounds succinct and professional.
- Never exaggerate or embellish your experiences or skillsets. Ethically representing your capabilities is crucial for both you and your future employer’s success.
