Introduction:
This post will provide recommendations for creating a visually appealing resume tailored to the needs of designers and architects. To get started, you can download the free indesign resume template here. Additionally, be sure to check out our tips for crafting the best content for your resume.
Typefaces:
When it comes to selecting typefaces for your resume, pay attention to the fonts you choose for titles, subtitles, and body text. In terms of color, I recommend using a very dark gray rather than straight black. This subtle touch adds sophistication and reduces excessive contrast.
Title Fonts:
For your name, we suggest using fun and light title fonts. Since your name will be displayed prominently and at a larger size, legibility concerns that apply to subtitles and body text are less of a concern.
Some Recommendations for Title Fonts:
Subtitle Fonts:
To enhance the readability and navigation of your resume, select distinct fonts for subtitles. These fonts will help identify different sections of information.
Some Recommendations for Subtitle Fonts:
Body Fonts:
When it comes to your resume’s body text, prioritize readability. Opt for fonts that are easy to read for hiring managers with varied visual abilities. Avoid text that is too thin, too bold, or overly decorative.
Some Recommendations for Body Fonts:
If you need assistance in choosing typefaces, feel free to utilize the fonts provided in my free InDesign template. The template features Adorn Garland for titles, Montserrat Medium for subtitles, and Montserrat Extra Light for body text.
Graphics:
After selecting your desired fonts, consider whether you want to include a background graphic, similar to our template. If you choose to incorporate a graphic, keep it light and soft, using subtle washes of color. Avoid using bold graphics that may distract from the information you want to convey. The gradient file used in the template was created by Codioful and can be downloaded at Pexels.
Personal Photos:
There has been a recent trend of including professional headshots in resumes. However, exercise caution when using personal photos. For instance, if you are applying for a government job, including a photo may disqualify you from consideration. Our free InDesign resume template does not include a spot for a headshot, but you can add one if desired. We recommend placing it on the sidebar, across from your name.
By following these design principles, your resume will effectively showcase your skills and talent as a designer or architect.
